 January 10: The Price We Pay for Drug Abuse. An important followup to last fall's presentation on the costs and downside of the "war on drugs." Led by Idlewild's own Bill Gibbons, District Attorney, Shelby County.

January 17: The Prodigal God: Recovering the Heart of the Christian Faith. Author Timothy Keller has been called a “C.S. Lewis for the 21st century.” In TheProdigal God Keller uses one of the best,known Christian parables to reveal God’s prodigal grace towards both the irreligious and the moralistic. Led by Minna Glenn and Ferrell Varner.

January 24 – February 7: Islam in Europe:   Its Demographics and Impact. During these three weeks we will visit one of the greatest challenges of the 21st Century. Led by Dr. Ken Schull, Department of History, University of Memphis.

February 14: The Great Emergence:               The Emergent Church refers to a group of Christians who are rethinking Christianity against the backdrop of Postmodernism. The Emergent Church emphasizes creative worship and spiritual reflection; a holistic approach to the role of the church in society; a flexible approach to theology; and a desire to re-examine the Bible against the context in which it was written. Come explore this growing movement and prepare to hear Dr. Phyllis Tickle speak at nextSunday’s Adult Forum. Led by Dr. Robert Llewellyn, Associate Professor of Philosophy, retired.

February 28–March 14: The Bonhoeffer Phenomenon: Portraits of a Protestant Saint. An exploration of the life and thought of German pastor and theologian Dietrich Bonhoeffer (1906-945). Bonhoeffer, who was involved in the resistance against Hitler and executed by theNazis at the end of World War II, is viewed as a Protestant saint. This class will look at the way his legacy has been appropriated in the years since his death and the implications of his life and thought for us today.  Led by Steve Haynes, Department of Religious Studies, Rhodes College.

March 21- 28: To Hear the Word: This helpful and lucid book by our own Dr. Milton Brown will serve as the basis for a two week discussion on how the Bible was formed and came to be Scripture, as well as the history of its translation and methods of exegesis. This class will provide helpful tools in one’s personal understanding of Scripture. Dr. Brown is a retired Professor of Religious Studies, Rhodes College.

April 4: Easter Breads [T.K. Young Room]

April 11–18: Faith and Finance: Christians and the Economic Crisis. Consider how Christians are called to live out God’s cry for justice in light of the uncertainty in the world’s resources. Led by Dr. Deborah Pittman, Associate Professor of Economicsand Business Administration, Rhodes College.

April 25: Who Were the Puritans and What Did They Believe? This session introduces the 17th century Puritans as they emigratedto America and explores their distinctive Federal Theology that continues to shape American political life and identity. Led by Dr. Matt Mathews.

May 2: The Antinomian Controversy in New England. We will look at the 17th century Antinomian Controversy that broke out in relation to Puritan theology, and explore some of the interesting questions that itraises about American religious life. Led by Dr. Matt Mathews.

May 9–23: The Preacher and The Presidents: Billy Graham in the White House by Nancy Gibbs and Michael Duffy. David Gergen writes that “for half a century American president’s have turned to the nation’s evangelical preacher at key times in their lives.… Gibbs and Duffy illuminate these intimate relationships—how they were shaped both by a search for spiritual blessing and a fascination with power….” Led by Dr. Will Jones, Department of Philosophy and Religion, University of Mississippi at DeSoto.
